NFL Pro Bowl - Who Needs It

Today is Saturday February 11, 2006 and tomorrow the National Football League's Pro Bowl will be played in Hawaii. The game - once a staple of network television - is now on ESPN. The only ones likely to take note will be sports writers lucky enough to get the plum Hawaii assignment and players getting a free trip to Hawaii.

This game has about as much appeal as a visit to the dentist where you expect to have tooth decay drilled and filled. Most NFL fans will ignore the game as it's hard to have a rooting interest even if a local favorite is playing in the game. If NFL fans were polled, most would be unable to recall whether the AFC or NFC won last year's Pro Bowl or the final score. This game has outlived its usefulness to the sport as well as the sport's fans. It will be delivered at 6 P.M. tomorrow, dead on arrival. Even worse is the prospect of up and coming NFL stars risking their careers on a meaningless game. As an example consider running back Robert Edwards who in 1999's game was seriously injured in a Pro Bowl event and whose promising career ended as a result of his injury.

It is time to put this dinosaur to sleep. Yes, the league should continue to select outstanding players but not for a Pro Bowl game but to a Pro Team.
