Economic Expansion and the Nation's Poor
I've read that some economists are saying that economic expansion, as we are experiencing today, is a boon not only to the rich and the middle class, but also to the poor. That wage increases are being experienced by all within the economy. What this view fails to 'see' is that the poor in this country are made up of mostly unemployed and under-employed individuals who have no real marketable skills and are lucky to earn minimum wage in a dead end job. The only time the poor's wages increase is when the minimum wage is increased.
To truly have the poor participate in this economic expansion, they must be given the opportunity to gain the skills needed so as to be marketable in this high tech economy.
There really are no more limited skill jobs as there were in the early and middle 20th century. Without high tech skills and some on-the-job experience, no advancement or wage progression can occur for those currently left behind.
