Occupy Wall Street Protests

Over the past few weeks, groups referring to themselves at the 99% have been taking up residence in parks and squares near the center of many cities setting up tents and holding signs complaining about the everything from the Wall Street bailouts of a few years ago, to compensation for company CEOs. So far they have only chanted, tried blocking a bridge (and got arrested) and blocked streets.

They have not stated a specific set of demands of either the government or of corporate America. A look at the various signs held by members of the protest group shows no cohesion of what they hope to achieve by their protests. The only thing certain is they are the 99% of society with grievances and their grievance is against the remaining 1%.

If history shows us anything, without a clear set of demands directed at someone or a specific definable group, little will come of this protest other than some arrests for unruly behavior and some possible criminal records for a few in the group. The protest will last a few months for most and up to a year for the few diehard individuals with no responsibilities to pull them away. The media is covering the protests for now, but even the media will move on to other stories to cover. In the end, what may have been a worthwhile goal will fade from memory and those that protested will only have stories to tell the kids or grandkids.
