John Walker and An Attorney
The parents of the former American Taliban fighter John Walker have recently complained to the press that their son has been held and interrogated for more than 17 days without access to a lawyer. His parents must think that Afghanistan is just a few miles west of Los Angeles California and that he was picked up for shoplifting.
Perhaps they were hoping that a lawyer could have been present when their son was first interrogated - just about the time the Taliban prisoners rioted in a fort west of Mazar-e Sharif. I believe their lawyer might of had trouble hearing the conversations over the sound of machine gun and mortar fire. Since Walker is now on a US ship in the Indian Ocean, perhaps a lawyer should be airlifted out to see him.
John Walker was picked up in a war zone. To expect him to be read his Miranda rights is absurd. To expect a lawyer to have access to him in a war zone and that US forces should provide security so that the lawyer can talk to him is ludicrous. If his parents had kept better track of their son, it's doubtful he would have ended up in Pakistan; much less in Afghanistan fighting for the Taliban or Al-Qaeda.
