Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State

Barack Obama has been announcing his choices for his cabinet positions of late and chose Hillary Clinton to be his nominee for Secretary of State. Hillary has accepted his invitation to join his cabinet.

Hillary's decision to accept is perplexing because she has the ability to remain relatively independent as a US Senator, but as Secretary of State, she would be little more than a mouthpiece for Obama's international policies. With the disagreements they both showed in their campaigns for the presidency, it is hard to believe that Hillary would be able to reverse herself and promote Obama's international policy agenda. It would be interesting to see behind the scenes at meetings between the two once Obama is formally in the White House.

I see this cabinet appointment as lasting no more than a year. Eventually Hillary will speak her mind in a meeting with a foreign dignitary, and cause an irreparable rifts between herself and Obama and either find herself grounded in the Secretary of State's office with lower level functionaries visiting heads of state, or Obama asking for her resignation so that he can appoint someone who will be more of a team player when it comes to representing him in foreign affairs. They cannot co-exist together.
