Ground Zero
The discussions continue on what to do at the 16-acre where the World Trade Center complex once stood. The business community wants to build 4 50+ story office towers to replace the office space lost when the towers collapsed. A few even want to rebuild the towers exactly as they were on the site. The relatives of some of the victims want the entire 16 acres to be made into a park with a memorial to the victims where the towers once stood.
The attack and collapse of the towers is and was a horrible act, but as much as the relatives of the victims have suffered, setting a side the entire 16 acres as a memorial just isn't practical from a community or business sense. Turning the space into a park might heal some wounds, but wouldn't address the needs of the community or America.
The footprint of the World Trade Center towers should be set aside for a park/memorial to the victims. A museum containing a model of what the center looked like before the attack would also be appropriate. But the rest of the 16-acre site should contain 50-60 story office space buildings to replace the millions of square feet of office space the center represented. For both the local community and business commuity, life must go on.
