Drawing The Line - The Laci Peterson Case

With the arrest of Scott Peterson for the alleged murder of his wife and unborn son, many stories have been printed and announced by the media with regards to possible motives and evidence. Nary a day goes by without an new so-called revelation of information about the case. CNN has had at least two "Larry King" shows with attorneys discussing the merits of the case. News media have gone to court to demand sealed evidence in the case be released.

At this point, portions of the autopsy have apparently also been leaked to the press. The prosecution is concerned that the portions leaked will help the defense's case and now want the full autopsy disclosed expecting the full details to better serve the prosecution. The legal trial is still months away but a trial by press is in full swing. Never mind the pain these details - leaking out in the press - bring to the families involved. Lately any crime the media thinks will sell papers is grist for its mill. Relatives of the victim are hunted down for exclusive interviews as if they were Hollywood celebrities being stalked by paparazzi. When will this all end.

It is time the media begin to police itself. We expect this type of story treatment by the sleaze media but not what was once consider the legitimate press. The details of the crime and evidence should be kept for the judge and jury when the legal trial begins. The current environment is hurtful the families involved, and certainly tramples the legal rights to a fair and impartial jury to try the case.
