Commuter Trains and Crush Zones
A recent study of commuter rail cars and crash effects concluded that by having the platform section between the cars absorb the impact of the crash, more rail car passengers could be saved. I doubt too many of these so-called crash experts regularly ride a commuter rail car. If they did, they would realize that many commuter rail systems provide too few cars (i.e. passenger seats) and that quite often, the platform area can be filled with passengers standing shoulder to shoulder. I'm sure these passengers will be happy to know that if the rail car crashes, their deaths will mean more sitting passengers surviving the accident!
