Attorney Client Priviledge

The US Attorney General's Office has announced that it will begin monitoring the conversations between detainees and their attorneys. This is an attempt to prevent another terrorist attack by uncovering a plot before the attack happens. The intent may be laudable, but it stikes at a conerstone of the American judicial system.

The sanctity of conversations between a client and his/her attorney would be seriously eroded if this new policy goes into effect. It begs the question of whether or not terrorism should require the US to 'cut back' on civil liberties and to what extent American citizens are willing to give up cherished liberties to insure a higher degree of safety in their daily lives. At what point is the 'price' too high.

I believe, as well meaning as the new policy may be, it should not be implemented as it is an unacceptable erosion of American principles.
