Airport Security Bill

An airport security bill has been passed by the US Congress. The push was on to get it passed and signed before Americans began traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday.

So much for congressional public relations. The bill's passage would have absolutely no effect on airport security for the Thanksgiving holiday. The same poorly trained private security guards would be in place and will continue to be for months to come. The needed luggage screening systems are still on order or packed away in storage still not being used. Congress must think American air travelers are a gullible bunch. For the record, early returns are in, and they aren't. The number of holiday travelers was down.

Yes, there was a need to pass an air safety bill. But to push it through before Thanksgiving is and was a waste of time and may have resulted in a bill that is less than what it should have been. For all the rush it will be 9 months to a year before the needed 20,000 plus screeners are properly trained and working at all the major US airports.

The US Congress should spend its time crafting legislation that will work, not playing an inane public relations game that accomplished nothing in the short term.
