Airport Security
Airport security is on the minds of many in this country. The main concern, especially in the Congress, is should airport security workers by federal employees or from the private sector.
The US Senate has come out 100-0 behind federal workers. Sounds good at first, but where would these federal workers come from? Would the private sector workers suddenly become federal workers overnight? Many consider them to be less than competent now. Would calling them federal workers anoint them to now be competent? If new workers have to be hired as part of a federal program, how many months would it take to train enough 'federal' workers to man airport security around the nation? Who would provide security during the months of training? How would we insure that the federal workers are, in fact, providing true airport security?
Whomever mans the airport security posts will be hard pressed to maintain any reasonable level of security for 8 hours a day, day after day. Boredom will set in, inattentiveness will eventually occur and we will be no better off than we are now.
Whomever the federal government chooses to provide airport security, in order to maintain security, workers (federal or private) will have to be rotated every few hours between airport security tasks if they are to have a chance to maintain the level of vigilance air travelers want and expect.
